A Gamers Guide to Bandwidth, Ping Rate, and Internet Speeds

The past decade has been a success for both online streaming of entertaining shows – and of course, multiplayer games. Well, who doesn’t know what an online game is? Almost everyone has played Pubg on Android/ iOS and a similar game Fortnite on Xbox. At the same time, there are others who still struggle at the hands of slow internet speed or higher ping rates. For online games, you need to have a good connection speed and slow ping rate to allow any disruptions or lags.

Ping Rate

Normal Bandwidth:

Typically, a good internet provider gives a bandwidth of 3 Mbps at least! According to the game console providers, this sufficiently enough to play the game at the right speed and ping (if you are not having too many users on one connection). As the number of players increases from one, you would need better speeds and lower ping. If you check the spectrum internet deals, you will find that they offer considerable speeds and lower ping rates.

What is a Ping Rate?

There has been a reiteration of ping, ping rate, higher ping, or lower ping. You must be wondering what the ping thing is (my bad, I should have explained earlier) on Earth. Anyway, the ping rate is the response time your device takes to communicate with the server stably. We usually measure and quantify it in terms of ms or milliseconds.

Effect of Ping Rate on Gaming Experience

In terms of Ping rates, a lower ping rate will give you a better gaming experience and vice versa. Let’s take Pubg as an example – you might notice the fluctuating number right beside the Wi-Fi icon. It indicates the ping rate – if it says 67 ms, it means that it is taking 67 milliseconds for the response to occur.

Speed Requirements for PlayStation 4

For PS4, at the least, you must have an internet connection with a download speed of 3 Mbps, which gives 1 Mbps as the upload speed. The ping’s maximum is 150 Ms. However, the average internet speed in the USA is 19 Mbps so that the ping will be way lower.

Speed Requirement for Strategic Games on Mobiles

Games that require a bit of action with lots of strategies need an internet speed of 3 Mbps at least, and the upload of 0.5 Mbps would be enough. In contrast, the ping should, in neither case, exceed the 150 Ms rate.

First Person Shooter Games

The FPS needs a download speed of 3 to 6 Mbps and an upload speed of 1 Mbps. The ping should be somewhere in between 50 Ms to 100 Ms.

Massive Multiplayer Online Games

These games include Pubg, Fortnite, Call of duty, and others. It needs, on average, 6 Mbps download speed and 1 Mbps upload speed. The ping should never increase the figure of 100 Ms.

Bottom Line

It is quite essential to have the right internet speeds – both upload and download, the bandwidth, and the ping rate. Internet connections like spectrum offer, on average, 15 Mbps in the USA. Thus, speed is not a concern for most gamers. However, the main problem lies with the number of users that connect to the same internet connection. Therefore, it is crucial that you limit the number of devices while you are playing online.
